Growing herbs is easy and pleasurable. Knowing a little about the optimum growing conditions of particular herbs will ensure that your herb garden thrives. Here are some growing tips for three common and useful herbs.

Thyme likes well drained soil to thrive and be at its best. This small plant grows to just a few inches tall, but it produces an aroma that is far bigger than its size! The plant provides good ground cover with the added bonus of producing purple and pink flowers that add a splash of color to your garden.

Thyme is an easy care plant that needs little attention, yet it will return year after year. There are a few basic precautions to take, that will ensure that your plants stay at their optimum condition. Firstly make sure that the soil is well aerated. These plants have short roots that don't like to fight their way through the soil. Secondly, do not plant Thyme until you are sure that the last snows have passed as the soil will be too compact for the roots to take hold.

Thyme is an excellent plant to attract bees into the garden, and all the benefits that they bring. It can also be used as a seasoning for many dishes.

Chives are a well known and useful plant to have in your herb garden. They are part of the onion family, and as such, when their leaves are snipped with scissors and then chopped and added to food, they give a mild onion flavor without the smell!

Chives can be grown on from bulbs, or grown from scratch using seeds. Both can give good results. Be warned that the plants can grow quite tall, and often form into unruly clumps if not attended to and separated. Chives produce pretty purple flowers that can be dried and added as a decoration to a potpourri bowl.

Dill is a useful and pretty herb to grow and can be used to season many different dishes with its distinct flavor. The dill plant has lovely feather like green leaves with small clusters of yellow flowers.

Dill can be easily grown from seeds. Make sure that you choose a sunny position, and just plant the seeds straight into the ground. This plant grows very quickly and need to be thinned out and separated to about 9 inches apart.

When dried, the seeds can be used to form new plants the following year if stored carefully.
